We have undergone major transformations both personally and professionally. We have stood for Councillor and Mayor in Whangarei’s local body elections – which was a real eye opener. Plenty of opportunity to utilize local body elections as a platform for the work we continue to do in the community- bringing awareness. 👍
We will post a list of the submissions we presented and the topics they covered.
We salute the brave men and women who continue lobbying for the reinstatement of NZ’s only oil Refinery at Marsden Pt, Northland. A 200 plus days occupation that put Marsden Pt – the oil Refinery plight- on both the local and international stage.
We spent 3 days at the Wellington Protests and met business people and others who had been mandated out of jobs. The Media misrepresented – everything. Rather than support those who were there because they had fallen on hard times, the Media did the exact opposite. The place was well maintained, organised, and structured for safety and awhi.

- This is a research project calling for Maori with a disabity or disabilities. Please share if you know of anyone who would like to participate. Do let Huhana know which is the preferred option: individual, with whanau, or in a focus group.
- Researchers from the University of Otago are looking for participants to take part in two interviews which aim to get an understanding of ‘Maori Disabiity Identity’ within your region. Eligible participants will include tangata whaikaha Maori (Maori with Disabilithy), 18 years or over who self-identify with a disability or permanent impairment and are able to consent to the research.
- Participation will invove taking part in either an interview, focus group, or hui These will explore topics such as culture and disability identity, tino rangatiratanga, discrimination, cost burden and engaging and accessing disability services. These interviews will be used to generate some survey question. We will then invite participants to a second interview to validate the survey questions.
- Please inform potential participants about our study and ask them to contact our team directly for more information. The study is funded by the Health Research Council of New Zealand. Nga Mihi. Huhana.
We, Business Crisis Support NZ and Wow Disability Whangarei took part in a zoom interview with Dr Hickey on Tueseday 25 August 2020. It was a refreshing, and open discussion about things that matter most to us a Maori Disabled.
Dr Huhana Hickey MNZM
Huhana Hickey has an LLB/BSoc Sci, LLM (Distinction) and a PhD in Law and Tikanga Maori from the University of Waikato. She was a solicitor at Auckland Disability Law (the first disability community law centre in New Zealand) and a Māori Research Fellow at the Taupua Waiora Māori Health Research Unit at the Auckland University of Technology, Akoranga, Auckland. Dr Hickey was the indigenous peoples’ representative for the International Disability Association steering group caucus during the development of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and is still involved with the IDA international networks. Dr Hickey was awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2015 for her services to Māori and disability community. She holds several governance roles, is a member of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of New Zealand, sits on the UNITEC ethics committee and is a life member of Rostrevor House in the Waikato.
Huhana is a Member of the lobby group ‘Lawyers for Vulnerable New Zealanders – who are opposed to the End of Life Choice Act because of the dangers it presents to the vulnerable members of the New Zealand Community. In saying this, we support the work of this group and others. While we do believe people have the right to a choice – we believe that the Act as it reads now (Tuesday 25 August 2020) is not bullet proof enough to protect the disabled, the vulnerable, the elderly, etc. Nga mihi ki a koutou katoa.

I was out at Parua Bay on Tuesday night when the Civil Defence Alarm went off on my phone. My friend and I were in shock. So it will be Level 3 tomorrow in Auckland, and Level 2 the rest of the country. We know what this will mean for some businesses.

Elections this year. How are you getting to the Polling booth? For me it’s just a 5 minute drive up the road. I think results will be exciting. I’ve been watching our local campaigns (Whangarei) and I remain undecided on the candidate vote. I read what people say and watch to see what they do.

What a busy past few weeks. We have been having Zoom Meeting discussions with Lisa from Mental Health Foundation NZ regarding an educational resource: Business Loss – and the Mental Health impact. We have been busy with ‘clients.’ and have now brought in our sister Facebook Group page ‘Wow Disability.’ We have written a post on our blog. Please join the facebook group even to learn more about disabilities, mental health, etc.

Email sent to the NZ Mental Health Assn, DPA Disabled Persons Assembly NZ Head Office and their Policy Writing group, Ministry of Health, MBIE, and the Commerce Commission seeking solutions and making them aware of some of the disturbing trends we have been seeing, working on the frontline. We are drafting a separate letter to the Human Rights Commission.

Covid-19 Tax changes to support businesses
NZ Govt’s response: Relief package for small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs). Let us know what you think.
The new measures include:
- $3.1 billion tax loss carry-back scheme (estimated cost over the next two years)
- $60 million estimated annual savings to business each year from changes to the tax loss continuity rules
- $25 million in the next 12 months for further business consultancy support
- Greater flexibility for affected businesses affected to meet their tax obligations
- Measures to support commercial tenants and landlords

Tuesday 14 April 2020 – Fiona Green – Zoom Meeting with North Shore New Zealand Labour Party Candidate Romy Udanga re: Covid 19 and SME’s. Romy is also the Chair for the NZ Labour Party’s Multicultural sector.
UPDATE: We are waiting until Grant Robertson has announced the Govt’s Economic package on Thursday and we will have our Zoom meeting after that.

- We will post an Article about the recent NZ Mental Health Conference, held at Christchurch Town Hall, 16 March 2020, and 17 March 2020. It was hosted by the Australian and NZ Mental Health Association. Friend and fellow Campaigner Lisa Cowe and I were presenters at this Conference. Lisa spoke about Bankruptcy and the Impact on Mental Health, I spoke about the psychological price of business loss – the disconnect and the human cost.
- To be accepted as a Presenter, we had to write an abstract which had to be approved by the Australia and New Zealand Mental Health Assn Panel. We succeeded out of 103 applicants.
